Which Documents Do You Need to Live and Work in the Netherlands?

If you’re moving to the Netherlands, there are a few essential documents you’ll need — both to live legally and to start working. Without these, it’s impossible to register, receive a salary, or access public services.


1. Valid ID or Passport

This is the most basic requirement. You must carry a valid EU identity card or passport. If you are from outside the EU, you may also need:

  • A residence permit (verblijfsvergunning)
  • A visa depending on your country and purpose

Your document must be valid during your entire stay.


2. Proof of Address

To register in a Dutch municipality (gemeente), you need a place to live:

  • A rental contract, housing declaration, or written permission from the property owner
  • Sometimes, a signed statement from the main occupant of the address

Without this, you won’t get your BSN number.


3. BSN Number (Burgerservicenummer)

This is your citizen service number, and it’s essential to:

  • Start working
  • Open a bank account
  • Get health insurance
  • Access any government services

You receive your BSN after registering at the gemeente. Some municipalities allow non-residents (RNI) to get a BSN with limited documents.


4. Health Insurance Proof

Once you start working, Dutch health insurance is mandatory. You must register with a Dutch insurer and receive:

  • A policy number
  • Monthly payment details

You’ll also need this when going to a doctor or pharmacy.


5. Employment Contract or Work Offer

If you’re applying for a BSN or opening a bank account, many institutions ask for:

  • A signed job offer or employment contract
  • Proof of income if available

Optional but Useful:

  • DigiD: A digital identity to access government websites (e.g. taxes, health insurance, benefits)
  • Bank account: For receiving salary and managing payments
  • Rental agreement: For housing subsidies or legal address registration

Final Tip

Make copies and scans of all important documents, and keep them stored safely — both on paper and digitally.
