How to Apply for Healthcare Allowance (Zorgtoeslag)
Living in the Netherlands can be expensive, especially when you’re just starting out. To help with the cost of health insurance, the Dutch government offers a monthly financial contribution called zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance).
This benefit is handled by the Belastingdienst (Tax Office) and is meant for people with low to middle incomes.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for healthcare allowance, you must:
- Be 18 years or older
- Have a Dutch health insurance policy (basisverzekering)
- Have a valid residence permit or EU nationality
- Earn below the income limit (for 2025: approx. €38,500 per year for singles; €48,000 for couples)
- Have assets (savings/investments) below a set threshold
Even if you’re working via an agency or only part-time, you may still qualify.
How Much Can You Receive?
The amount you receive depends on:
- Your income
- Whether you live alone or with a partner
In 2025, the maximum zorgtoeslag is:
- Around €127 per month for singles
- Around €243 per month for couples
You’ll receive the money directly in your bank account, usually around the 20th of each month.
How to Apply
- Go to www.toeslagen.nl
- Log in with your DigiD (you can request it at DigiD.nl)
- Fill in the form for “zorgtoeslag aanvragen”
- Submit your income details and health insurance info
- You’ll receive a confirmation, and payment will begin if approved
You can also apply retroactively — so if you missed a few months, you may still receive them.
Important Notes
- If your income changes, update your details in the system to avoid overpayment
- If you earn too much later in the year, you may have to pay back the extra amount
- Always check your mail or Berichtenbox for updates from the tax office
